Prime
Laminating |
|
Prime Laminating has
been in the business of providing enclosures and shielding for equipment
manufacturers in the semi-conductor, medical, security and bomb detection
industries. They have taken pride in satisfying their customers for the last
17 years under the leadership of Jay Poirier. In order to keep growing in
the industry, Prime Laminating decided to expand their capabilities.
Services provided
include:
- Laminating of
plastics, aluminum, lead, plywood, MDF, high pressure laminates and
honeycomb cores.
- Sheet metal
fabrication (CNC punching and forming) of aluminum, plastics, steel and
stainless steel.
- Machining of
plastics, aluminum, lead, plywood, MDF, laminates and honeycomb cores.
- Design assistance
to help customers design and re-design enclosures that are stronger,
lighter, more durable and cost effective.
After purchasing their
current facility in 1994, Prime Laminating has expanded to 18,000 square
feet of production space. A new addition in this area is a Komo VR 510 Mach
One S. With a team of 12 employees and the new Komo machine, Prime
Laminating was able to increase their customer base by 20% and expose their
business to many new potential customers.
The addition of the
Komo machine has had an instant impact on Prime Laminating. Time savings on
projects has been the most apparent. Most of the materials used by the
company required machining after laminating, which is a task that their
other equipment was not capable of doing.
Andy Neufell,
Operations Manager for Prime Laminating relates, “In the past, we had been
cutting honeycomb core material on a conventional table saw. When additional
cutouts were required, simple hand tools were used. With the Komo, we can
now nest the entire job in a DNC schedule file with speeds up to 3150 inches
per minute. This has saved us an estimated 75% in time.”
Andy also tells Komo
that they have been able to reduce the machining time by 85% on repeated
jobs due in part to the reduction of set-up time, tool changes and cycle
time. With the nesting capabilities of Router-CIM and the Komo router,
plywood jobs can be cut at 700 inches per minute and has given them an
estimated time savings of 80%.
One of the many
pleasant surprises was the use of the Komo router to cut 5/8” thick lead
sheets. Using sheets with weights up to 900 lbs, Prime Laminating has made
the machining of lead a typical application for the Komo router.
Using features of their
Mach One S machine, multi-laminated doors have been made simple. Using a
dual sided aggregate head, they can now machine the hinge pocket cutouts
with extreme accuracy and repeatability to within the required +/-0.005”.
Prime Laminating
continues to exceed customer’s expectations while reaching out to earn new
customers. The addition of the Komo VR 510 Mach One S has helped them to
carry on this path.

Watson Wood
Works |
|
The purchase of a new Komo
VR Mach One S 512 by Watson Wood Works has made them a believer in Komo
machines.
Watson Wood Works was
founded in 1984 by John and Parker Watson in North Carolina. Continued
growth has allowed them to move from a beginning shop of 1,800 square
feet
up to a 40,000 square foot production facility in 2002 with a staff of 20
shop employees and seven office employees.
Watson Wood
Works focuses on the medium end commercial casework and millwork markets.
Medical hospitals and small offices, universities, financial institutions,
museums, churches, and the most recent, sporting facilities are some of the
markets that Watson Wood Works services. They are
able to fabricate all of their own solid surface materials in house.
Purchasing a new piece of
machinery is a tough decision for any company, but the Komo proves that it
is well worth the investment. “Every project we have cut, we have reduced
our labor hours by 80%” stated Christopher Thomson, Project Manager for
Watson Wood Works. The ease of use allows them to make many intricate parts
and use a variety of materials that were next to impossible to do before.
The other benefit of the Komo is the
included Router-CIM Automation Suite software. “We could not have made the
jump without Automation Suite, we are able to do everything in AutoCAD, not
jumping from one program to another.”
Watson Wood Works has been
able to maintain their level of employment due to the increased facility
size and the purchase of a new Komo CNC router. They are expecting
double-digit growth in the next year without adding additional employees.
Watson Wood Works is a
company that has been able to achieve more of their goals with a Komo CNC
Router.
Watson Wood Works
is located at:
780 Megahertz Drive
Winston-Salem, NC 27107
